The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced lane closures on State Route 161 starting Sunday, Sept. 14, for fish passage construction. The right lane on northbound and southbound SR 161 will close daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for southbound traffic and 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. for northbound traffic. The project will last about six weeks until Oct. 16, 2026.
These closures affect drivers traveling between Puyallup and surrounding areas. WSDOT advises drivers to expect delays, especially during peak travel times. Similar closures on nearby routes, including SR 167 and I-5, are scheduled through Sept. 22.
WSDOT says the fish passage project aims to improve habitat for salmon and other fish species. Residents should check WSDOTβs website for real-time updates on traffic conditions during the construction period.
