Kent Man Pleads Guilty to I-5 Drive-By Shooting

A bullet from Leo Adolf Aiono's handgun flattened a driver's rear tire and ruptured his gas tank on northbound Interstate 5 near State Route 516 on April 15, 2025 β€” and the victim's phone video, which captured Aiono's face and the name tag on his work shirt, helped seal his fate. Aiono, 40, of Kent, fired at the other driver at approximately 3:40 p.m., according to the Washington State Patrol.

Aiono's vehicle pulled alongside the victim's car before he brandished a handgun and opened fire. The bullet struck the victim's right rear tire, causing it to go flat, and also ruptured the gas tank. Both vehicles exited onto SR 516, where Aiono stopped at a red light and got out of his car to confront the victim a second time.

The victim recorded the confrontation on video, which captured Aiono's face and the name tag on his work shirt. The victim also provided troopers with the suspect's license plate. Troopers and Kent Police responded to a residence where they observed the suspect vehicle in the driveway. Aiono's brother arrived during the standoff and persuaded him to surrender. Aiono then consented to a search of his truck and home, where the handgun was recovered.

Aiono was booked into King County Jail following his arrest. The King County Prosecutor's Office subsequently filed charges, and Aiono has since pleaded guilty to Assault in the Second Degree for a drive-by shooting.
